Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA)

NOTE: Our VITA sites open January 25th and will begin accepting returns, however they will not be filed until the official start of the IRS tax season, February 12th. This means tax refunds will not be available before March.

Established in 2010, United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) provides fast, free and confidential tax preparation services for low-to-moderate income individuals and families with a household income less than $55,000. All tax returns are filed by an IRS certified tax preparer.

For individuals living paycheck-to-paycheck, a full tax refund could be a significant boost to a family budget. VITA offers:

• FREE tax preparation and financial counseling services
• The highest accuracy rate of any tax preparation service
• An average savings of $273 on tax preparation fees
• Access to important credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which can return up to $6,318 to qualifying families

As we continue to observe COVID-19 safety guidelines, VITA tax preparation services will be offered both virtually and through select, socially-distanced intake locations. This year, VITA has four ways to file your taxes – all for free:

  1. Virtual: File from the comfort of your own home! Have a VITA volunteer guide you through the filing process completely online.
  2. Virtual Drop-Off: Upload your tax documents virtually and a VITA volunteer will call you once your filing is ready for review and DocuSign.
  3. Site Drop-Off: Drop your tax documents off at a VITA intake location and return on a scheduled date to review and sign in-person.
  4. Traditional: Bring your tax documents to a VITA location and a VITA volunteer will guide you through the filing process completely in-person.

Households that earned less than $66,000 in 2020 qualify for FREE virtually assisted, or do-it-yourself, tax filing through MyFreeTaxes.com. MyFreeTaxes is the only online initiative allowing free tax assistance in all fifty states (and the District of Columbia).

Through MyFreeTaxes, families can:

• Electronically file both state and federal taxes through our secure software partner, H&R Block.
• Find local tax preparation and filing assistance through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and AARP Tax Counseling for elderly populations. (To find a free help center near you, please call 800.906.9887 or search by a location by clicking here.)
• Connect with the National Disability Institute to access the financial education and tax preparation assistance available to individuals with disabilities.

Each year, VITA volunteers put billions of dollars back in the pockets of low-income taxpayers nationwide, and in so doing, facilitate sustainable community reinvestment and development. Campaign for Working Families (CWF) now offers Virtual VITA Tax Training for volunteers to become certified through online training courses. Sign up to be a virtual volunteer TODAY!
