Capacity Building

Strengthening and supporting our region’s nonprofits

Each year, your United Way partners with hundreds of nonprofit organizations across the Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey area to dismantle poverty and expand opportunities for all.

But we do more than provide funding — we work side by side with nonprofit partners to ensure they have the resources and tools to succeed. For more information on how your nonprofit can join us, contact or visit our NonProfit Partner section.

The health and wellbeing of our nonprofit community is critical to our region’s recovery efforts and the Nonprofit Finance Accelerator helps ensure that organizations can continue to serve the pressing needs of our communities – particularly the communities of color
that were hardest hit by the pandemic.

Launching a financial management program

Launched in April 2021 to help nonprofit leaders adapt and rebuild from the impacts of COVID-19, the Nonprofit Finance Accelerator is designed to make it easier for nonprofit leaders to access the technical assistance they need.

In partnership with Comcast NBCUniversal and the Nonprofit Finance Fund, the Accelerator provides a range of resources, including financial management webinars, coaching from experts, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and online tools and templates, to a racially diverse group of nonprofit leaders representative of communities most impacted by the pandemic.

Advancing Leadership Equity

As studies continue to show a lack of diversity among leaders of nonprofit organizations and foundations, United Way is focused on advancing racial equity throughout the region’s nonprofit sector.

With the findings of the report:  Reflecting Forward: Philadelphia-based Black Nonprofit Leaders’ Recommendations for Regional Funders, United Way is working to launch a centralized hub to offer best-in-class knowledge and resources, research and data, and collaborative strategies to promote leadership advancement, equitable grant making, and inclusive decision-making in the nonprofit sector and among grant-making institutions.
